Who doesn't love to get mail? The real, handwritten, old-fashioned, sweet love note kind of mail? Well, Valentine's Day is fast approaching, and Lovebug has been visiting our house this week, leaving love notes for everyone. The Little Nguyens are eager to read their "mail" from Lovebug each morning at breakfast. And it is so sweet to see the boys writing and drawing notes for Lovebug to read when she delivers her mail at night while they sleep. This is a tradition I think Lovebug should continue all year long!
Now that our boys are growing up and becoming, ummm...more like boys, they show their love in different ways than girls do. Of course, we get hugs and kisses and I love yous, and we want to hold our Little Nguyens a little tighter and a little longer, knowing each day with them is a gift not to be taken for granted. But as they grow older, their hugs are little quicker, their kisses not as wet, and they don't need us as much when their little knees get scraped. We get pictures of army bases with Daddy saluting all the soldiers, or bright red fire trucks with Mommy aiming the deluge gun...but that's as emotive as it gets most days. As parents of boys, we have to look at life from their perspective...army bases and fire trucks are important to them, and there we are in the pictures they have drawn, front and center. That has to say something. They love us even if they aren't dripping with emotion most of the time. Oh, these days are going by too fast.
Another kind of mail has arrived this week! Uncle Markie and Aunt Janet strike again! Can you spell S-U-G-A-R? Our candy stash has been getting a little low lately, but all fear of the Christmas Pez running out has been alleviated! A new shipment of Valentine confections arrived yesterday.
The Little Nguyens love to get packages, but especially from Uncle Mark and Aunt Janet. There are always novel little holiday trinkets and toys inside, in addition to a whole slew of sugary treats. It reminds them that, even though we live so far away, they are loved and thought of often. And, you are never too far to be spoiled by your aunt and uncle! A few years back, when we were visiting them around Halloween, the Little Nguyens discovered that Uncle Mark shared with them a love of sugar cookies and candy corn. He even baked Halloween sugar cookies with the First Little Nguyen! (I think, if I remember correctly, the Second Little Nguyen was a bit too busy to help, as he was unloading ALL of Aunt Janet's tupperware from her cabinet onto the kitchen floor!) Now, Uncle Mark and Aunt Janet don't miss a beat, and our collection of holiday Pez dispensers is growing. Now, we even have Pez dispensers that are furry and attach to our school bags!
Among the other treasures inside each package was a SLINKY for each Little Nguyen. Oh, how badly I wanted one of these when I was a little girl! Remember the song from the television commercial? It's Slinky, it's Slinky! It's fun for a girl or a boy! Strangely, this is not a toy that we have ever had in our house, and it amused the boys for quite awhile as they tried out their Slinky skills on the stairs. In our Slinky competition, we discovered that Daddy was the only one who could make it go all the way from the top to the bottom of the stairs! Is there anything he can't do?!
