What better thing to do on a cool Saturday morning than go fishin'! The Little Nguyens were overjoyed when Chi came home last evening from work with two surprises: a box of Daylight Doughnuts and a fishing license! They have been asking to go fishing for quite awhile now, but the heat and humidity of summer mornings stifled the enthusiasm a bit. Since the weather has been so cool and beautiful this week, it was a perfect plan for an almost-Fall weekend morning.
Last evening, we ventured out to find a little tackle box, hooks and the proper bait for this amateur fishing trip. The excitement heightened as the Little Nguyens laid out their warm clothes for the morning (we didn't even plan the blue/brown color combo or the hats!), and they both complained of being too excited to fall asleep. Who could blame them?! There were doughnuts waiting to be eaten this morning. It was still dark, and very chilly, when they woke up at o'dark hundred. After a sprinkle doughnut and a glass of milk, though, they quickly suited up and packed their fishin' gear. The Littlest Nguyen was delighted to finally be able to use the Spiderman fishing pole that has been waiting for him on the wall of the garage, and the First Little Nguyen felt so grown-up when Chi showed him the real rod he would be using.
After a quick refresher course in casting and reeling, the First Little Nguyen claimed the end of the pier and began his quest to catch a huge salmon or tuna in the lake. Chi worked with the Second Little Nguyen until he finally got the hang of things. Me...I enjoyed sitting there on the pier with my newspaper and hot coffee, cozy in my sweats. It was fun to sit there and watch them having so much fun, and I took a lot of pictures. A family of mallards joined us after awhile (along with many of their cousins, aunts and uncles when the word spread that we had bread), and that probably did the job in scaring most of the fish away...either that or the excited squeals and shrieks from the Little Nguyens every time they felt a tug or a pull on their lines. There did get a few bites, but, of course caught nothing but a good time. Not bad for a cool Saturday morning. The First Little Nguyen said he'd like to do it every weekend!
