a memorable day

This was just the day we needed to kick off our summer! We started our Memorial Day with a LONG bike ride from our house to Shelley Lake and back. Thanks to the WeeRide co-pilot (if you're not a bike enthusiast, think of a unicycle with handlebars that attaches to the rear of an adult bicycle), we have been able to take some really fun rides with the First Little Nguyen this year: 13 miles of the American Tobacco Trail, various greenway routes, and countless trips to Shelley Lake and Baileywick Park. He is really learning the "rules of the road" and how to bike safely, all while attached securely to the rear end of my bicycle! You might think he gets a "free ride" back there, but make no mistake. The child actually pedals (the co-pilot requires him to) and is learning to take advantage of the downhills to gather speed for the big hills! The Second Little Nguyen is comfortably situated in the Burley (a.k.a The Chariot) behind Chi's bike. He loves strapping himself in with Milo (his beloved monkey), a drink and snack, and a few good books. He gets to watch the scenery go by, cheers us on when we manage to get up a really big hill, and often takes a little snooze with the cool breeze blowing in on him. In another year, the First Little Nguyen will probably be able to ride safely and competently on his own while the Second Little Nguyen will give up his chariot in favor of the co-pilot. But we won't rush that along!

After returning from our bike ride, we packed up lunch and headed to the pool for a picnic and some fun in the sun. A dip in the cool...umm, I mean frigid...pool was refreshing for the Little Nguyens, who didn't hesitate to jump right in. I, on the other hand, was content to dip my pink pedicured toes in the water while I watched them splash about. I am not quite prepared for full-body immersion yet.

The Little Nguyens helped the First Nguyen assemble a new grill later on in the afternoon, which we used to roast our Memorial Day corn on the cob! Who knew it would be so sweet so early in the season!? The Second Little Nguyen loves corn on the cob more than anything. He consumed three ears on his own, and then we had to put a stop to the corn-eating. It wasn't exactly a low-starch, low-carbohydrate choice, but hey...you're only three once, right? How can we say "no" to fresh corn on the cob!? The First Little Nguyen loved the corn as well, but his efforts were much more paced as he is missing a crucial corn-on-the-cob-eating front tooth. It was tricky, but, as the pictures show, he managed to find a way!

There wasn't an unfilled minute in our Memorial Day, but that's the way we like our holidays to be. Our busy holidays are just the way we like them, spent with the ones we want to make our memories with.
