One of the things the First Little Nguyen looks forward to most at the end of each school year is the Accelerated Reader Breakfast of Champions! Of course, we all know why -- a sweet glazed doughnut is the reward for a year's worth of reading, quizzing, and meeting point goals! In my 8-year old's mind, a doughnut is so much better than a medal...
A little shy -- accepting his award and ribbon from Mr. Baird
This year, the First Little Nguyen took first place in his class for AR points earned. Yeah, little guy! Nice job! However, the soccer-playing extraordinaire, tree-climbing champion, book-reading phenom, general girl wonder and total love-of-his-life for three years -- Hope -- gave him a run for his money, and they tied for first place overall in 2nd grade. She edged him out by a fraction of a comprehension point. Ouch! Had it been anyone but her, I think the loss would have stung a lot more. But he loves her dearly and worships the ground she walks on. She makes him blush and giggle, so how could he be mad? Anyway, we were so proud of him for reading so many books he thought he never could, for striving so hard to read fluently and with strong comprehension, and for being an all-around lover of books. That's all any parent could want.
